WIENER, Norbert. Cybernetics or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine.
New York; Paris: John Wiley & Sons; Hermann et Cie, 1948.

First American edition of "the first conventionally published book, ..., to include a serious discussion of electronic digital computers" (Hook & Norman). The American edition appeared a few months after the French edition published by Hermann et Cie. "Wiener was stimulated to write the book after an informal discussion with the owner of the Parisian publishing house Hermann et Cie, who challenged him to write the book. Initially the MIT Press objected to having one of MIT's most famous professors published by a French company. But Wiener's contract with Hermann was binding, and MIT had to content itself with involvement in the American distribution." (Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, p.497). The American edition was printed offset from the typesetiing of the French, reproducing the numerous mistakes. OOC 992.
